What Are the Benefits of Self-care?
What does self-care mean? I think self-care means taking care of yourself so you can be healthy, can be well, can do your job well, can help care for others, and can do everything you want to accomplish in a day. Doctors and therapists have been noticing that there is an epidemic of anxiety and depression, where everyone is feeling it. Self-care is part of the answer to how to better cope with our daily stressors. People are feeling lonelier and less able to unwind and slow down. This can make anyone feel even more anxious and overwhelmed by even the simplest of tasks. The World Health Organization defines self-care as: “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” As self-care has become more mainstream, the definition has opened up to anything that you do for yourself that feels nourishing. Of course, this definition has different meanings from individual to individual.
I suppose my view of self-care also expanded and grew, especially as the effects of the pandemic struck us all. I do remember that when I initially began Lizush, I wanted to stay firm with the idea and notion of self-care and not self-harm. And having read and studied many articles on the subject, I knew synthetic chemicals and non-natural additives could really harm our outer physical appearance as well as our inner physical health. I chose natural ingredients and products for the skincare items, knowing that they would give short-term positive effects for us, as well as not harming us long term. I developed these products to ensure that whenever they were being used, it was self-care that was regularly being practiced. And by doing so, we are helping in the positive health outcomes, reduce stress, improve the immune system, increase productivity, and higher self-esteem.
Self-care can actually be split into three different categories:
- Emotional self-care: positive self-talk, bubble baths, ‘no’ to unnecessary stress, get together with friends
- Physical self-care: prioritize sleep, have an exercise routine, choose healthy and nourishing foods.
- Spiritual self-care: spend time in nature, meditate, keep a journal, incorporate regular acts of kindness in your day
Lizush products are part of this self-care process. Using our products such as bath bombs or shower steamers can promote positive self-talk and general relaxation, which is part of emotional self-care. A number of my products can promote good sleep, such as essential oils, bath bombs, shower steamers and the like. These products promote physical self-care, and help aid in getting focused with regular exercise and healthy eating. And finally, spiritual self-care can be implemented by your thoughts after the use of my products, how you feel about yourself and life, by journaling. Also, meditating during your bath bomb baths or shower steamer showers can really get you in a calm state of mind that can motivate you to move forward, healthily.
