The Benefit of Taking Long Showers
Showering cleans the skin and removes dead skin cells to help clear the pores and allow the skin cells to function. It also washes away bacteria and other irritants that could cause rashes and other skin problems. Long hot showers also have another positive benefit to them. They ease muscle tension as well as having a calming effect on you that relieves stress. A long cold shower can make you more alert, improve circulation, and speed up muscle recovery. But there are also challenges to this way of thinking. The CDC feels that if your shower is longer than 15 minutes, there may be negative consequences. For instance, if you have eczema, short and lukewarm showers are recommended. Physicians say it is important to avoid long hot showers in the winter months since the heat can damage the surface of the skin and cause even dryer skin. The purpose of a shower is to cleanse and hydrate the skin; however, prolonged showers could strip away the natural oils of the skin and open up our pores, thus releasing moisture. It can also disrupt the normal skin barrier, which keeps irritants out and reduces itching and dryness. On the other hand, if you under-wash your skin, there could be an overgrowth of bacteria and organisms as well as potential for body odor. Which shower type you choose depends upon your condition, symptoms or even preference. If you have a cold or cough, the symptoms can be managed by having a hot shower and loosening phlegm. Long hot showers can make it easier to fall asleep at night. The hot shower at night artificially raises your temperature, which will automatically drop after the shower. This sudden temperature drop may help you get to sleep faster. On the other hand, cold showers reduce muscle soreness, calm itchy skin, and help wake you up in the morning. The bottom line is, showering 5-10 minutes with lukewarm or warm water can help your skin from drying out and at the same time can clean your body very well. Body Salt Scrubs help to shed the dead skin cells while showering. During the showering process, I love to use our naturally fragrant Shower Steamers that can be used as a mild form of aromatherapy, which can help in reducing stress.Either way, after showering, it is essential that we try to moisturize immediately after a shower. First, rather than rub your skin dry, it is essential to pat yourself dry because it is gentler on the skin and less abrasive. While your skin has taken in moisture from the showers, it has also lost some of its natural oils. You should restore some of that natural barrier, while your skin has soaked up some water before evaporation sets in.
